Women’s XC Places Third At Queensborough Invite

BRONX, N.Y. (Sept. 17, 2017) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's cross country team competed in the Queensborough Invitational on Sunday at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. The Mariners came in third place with a team score of 133, behind first-place Hunter College (55) and second-place JUCO school Monroe College (69). 

Sophomore Anna Lewis (Lakehead, Calif.) paced the Mariners with an 11th-place showing in the 5K race, as she crossed the finish line with a time of 21:44.14. Classmate Carissa Buonerba (Atlanta, Ga.) came in 22nd place (22:32.68) and freshman Kelly Caubo (Phoenix, Md.) was not far behind with a 24th-place finish (22:37.97). 

Sophomore Alyssa DeGuzman (Stafford, Va.) and junior Erica Lawlor (Stafford Springs, Conn.) rounded out the Mariners' scorers with 41st and 48th place finishes, respectively, DeGuzman in 23:54.67 and Lawlor in 24:15.27.

The Mariners return to action next Saturday, Sept. 23, when they take part in the Bard Raptors Invitational up in Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y. The women's 5K race is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the cross country course on the campus of Bard College.
